How you can develop your own sense of fashion

Sense of fashion | Finding your own personal style

Sense of fashion is something that anyone can develop – as long as one understands how to choose clothes and styles that suit you best.

Developing your own sense of style takes a little bit of an effort – but can be rewarding when you understand how everything you might see on someone else may not always suit you.

Developing your own sense of fashion- first steps with colour choosing

Start with the basics. What is your own personal view of colours? What colours do you like? How do you think you look in different colours?

Colours have the power to highlight your skin tone – or to make your skin tone dull. Understand what works for you and what doesn’t. It may take some time.

Colour palettes can vary with time of day. You need to pick darker shades for the evening and lighter ones for the day.

How do you relate to different clothing themes?

How do you like your length – in skirts and dresses? Identify what lengths work for your height and size.

If you are not too tall, you can work best with short lengths. Longer lengths are good if you are tall and have a longer core to accentuate belts and waist.

A length between short and long can also work equally well in bringing out the best in anyone. It can be also the epitome of elegance when it comes to choosing clothes.

What is your idea of fashion?

We talk of timeless fashions but timeless fashions mean not too trendy and not too old fashioned. These are pieces that work for you whether you are choosing cutting edge fashion or not. They are wearable in any age and can be pieces you must invest in for your wardrobe as dependable and elegant items.

A classic white shirt, a mid length pencil skirt, the famous little black dress, a nude blouse that can be worn for any occasion ; these are the kind of pieces that define good fashion sense. You can include such pieces as you build your wardrobe to develop your own sense of fashion.

Accessorise – the right way

Accessories are vital in building your own sense of style.

Choosing hand bags, scarves, shoes and belts must be done with care. A key area of concern must be whether the accessories you choose suits you. If you are not too tall, big patterns will not work. Stick to soft fabrics. Choose classic cuts and timeless accessories that can work anywhere.

Choosing fabrics

Structured fabrics work best on long and lean silhouettes. Not all of us are long and lean so we need to understand what fabrics are good for pretty much everyone. Softer fabrics can suit anyone – thicker ones will work well if cut well.

Fabrics such as silk and linen is great for any body shape. They are also classic fabrics and can be structured into any form such as dresses, pants and blouses. Linen is great for day wear – polyesters are easy to use but may not always be very comfortable or long lasting. Silks are top end but work well with any wardrobe and any silhouette.

Choosing jewellery – what is your style?

Choosing jewellery is also vital in developing your own style sense.

Do you like chunky pieces – do they suit you? Or is your taste in jewellery more delicate pieces and co-ordinates?

Also you need to understand what jewellery goes with what outfits. Large pieces of jewellery is best worn with plain colours while patterned clothes call for tiny yet significant pieces of jewellery.

Choosing jewellery can be something you need to study carefully. It takes work to understand what suits outfits, occasions and the time day.

Understanding personal style –

This takes an effort – over time, you will know what works best as co-ordinates for you and what works as separates.

A black skirt or a pair of pants can be a personal favourite that suits any occasion. Combine that with a line up of soft colours and shapes to create a stylish wardrobe. The classic white shirt can work in any fashion setting as a timeless classic.

Personal style is individual – but it can be inspired by watching others and learning from them. But keep in mind that not all styles will work for you although it can look good on someone else.

Experiment with colours, styles and shapes until you understand what works for you and what doesn’t. Learn from those with similar body shape and taste as yours. Follow celebrities to understand this best.

When you set out to identify what works best for you, you will make mistakes but you will also learn what will make your own style unique.

Everyone of us can develop our own sense of style – it is up to each of us to pursue this as a goal.
