Subhashini Kularatne, a 27-year-old resident of Thalathuoya, Kandy, is a testament to how passion and creativity can transform a hobby into a thriving business. With a background in agriculture and a current pursuit of a degree in Agriculture and Plantation Crops at Wayamba University, Subhashini’s journey into woodworking is a story of unexpected discovery and dedication.

A Family Legacy and a Spark of Inspiration
Subhashini’s foray into woodworking began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many traditional businesses faced challenges. Her father, who once ran a coconut wood shop, had to scale back operations as the pandemic took its toll. “My father used to run a coconut wood shop. There were two uncles working there. They made things like doorposts and windows. But later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, those businesses collapsed, and my father was trying to quit,” she explains.
It was during this period that Subhashini found herself drawn to the craft. “When I was at home, I used to take a hammer and put pieces of wood together to make small items for fun. Phone holders, tab stands—they were appreciated by my family and friends a lot,” she recalls. Encouraged by their support, she created a Facebook page to showcase her work, but it didn’t gain much traction initially.
Inspired by woodworking videos on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, Subhashini decided to try something new. “I saw videos of people from abroad making coconut wood items, and I liked it. I created a TikTok page and posted a video, which became very popular,” she says. This unexpected success motivated her to turn her hobby into a business. “So that’s why I thought of stepping into this business that I never had in my mind.”

Mastering the Craft
Starting a woodworking business was not without its challenges. Subhashini had to familiarize herself with various tools and machines, a process that required patience and practice. “It took me a while to get used to the machines,” she admits. Over time, she honed her skills and began creating intricate pieces, selling her work to over 2,000 customers.

Among her most challenging projects was crafting a large Ayurvedic steamer for a client. “An Ayurvedic doctor gave me an Ayurvedic steamer to make. It was a very large item, and I worked very hard to make it with my father. It was a valuable item, made very delicately so that the steam did not escape,” she shares.
Advice for Aspiring Woodworkers
Subhashini emphasizes the importance of starting with a solid foundation of knowledge. “The beginning is difficult for everyone. We have to learn a lot about woodworking practically. But we must have basic knowledge for it. We also need to learn how to handle machine tools. We need to have a good knowledge of wood types and painting,” she advises. She also highlights the need for safety precautions, as woodworking can be hazardous without proper equipment. “Since there is a possibility of accidents, we need to use safety equipment often.”
For those looking to start a woodworking business, Subhashini offers practical advice:
- Start Legally: “Be sure to start this business with the relevant licenses and documents properly prepared.”
- Leverage Technology: “Unlike before, there are machine tools that make work easier now. Study about them and use them.”
- Stay Passionate: “Engage in this business with enthusiasm. It is a fun business that can be done happily, so you can go on a big journey.”
- Build Relationships: “Be very friendly with any customer we deal with, no matter what level.”
- Document Your Journey: “Record everything you learn from the day you start somewhere. Don’t be impatient, use the resources you have, and start working.”
She adds, “If you have the strength in your heart, you can definitely do this business.”
