Komas Beauty: A Little Piece of the Maldives in Every Colour
When we think of the Maldives, we imagine turquoise lagoons, brilliant blue seas and islands filled with colour. For Maldivian beauty entrepreneur Sarah Ibrahim, those familiar shades became the inspiration for Komas Beauty. From ocean-inspired eyeshadows to palettes celebrating Maldivian women and marine life, this independent makeup brand is making its own beautiful connection between cosmetics, culture and home.

When someone mentions the Maldives, what comes to mind first? For most of us, it is the sea, those beautiful islands surrounded by clear water, white sandy beaches and shades of blue that seem almost impossible to describe. Even the ocean refuses to stay one colour. Near the shore, it can be a soft, almost transparent turquoise, while further away it deepens into rich blue, with green appearing where the sunlight catches the water.
There is so much colour in the Maldives beyond the beaches too. The warmth of the sand, the pink and orange of tropical flowers, the deep greens of island vegetation and the beautiful glow of the evening sky all belong to its natural beauty. Now imagine taking some of those colours and turning them into an eyeshadow palette. That is the lovely idea behind Komas Beauty, an independent Maldivian makeup brand that brings the colours, language and culture of the islands into everyday beauty.
It Began With a Young Woman Who Saw Home in a Makeup Palette
The woman behind Komas Beauty is Sarah Ibrahim, a Maldivian whose interest in makeup eventually grew into a business of her own. After spending several years abroad, Sarah returned to the Maldives in 2019, and began reconnecting with her roots and creativity. While helping out at a local salon, she came across a beach-inspired eyeshadow palette that reminded her of home, and it sparked an idea.
What would a makeup palette look like if its colours came from the Maldives itself? Not simply a tropical collection designed to appeal to tourists, but something that reflected the islands through the eyes of someone who actually called them home. Sarah began developing that idea, experimenting with shades and designs before introducing Komas Beauty in October 2020.
Her mother supported those early steps, and the brand became a deeply personal creative project. Sarah has also spoken about reinvesting money into her well-loved existing collections, while taking the time to carefully research and develop future products, rather than rushing from one launch to another. It is a thoughtful approach that makes the story behind Komas Beauty as interesting as the colours themselves.
Moodhu: When the Colours of the Sea Became Eyeshadow
Komas Beauty's first collection, the Moodhu Palette, arrived on 25 October 2020, bringing twelve eyeshadow shades inspired by the Maldivian sea, landscape and culture. The colours included beautiful blues, greens and natural tones, carefully selected with brown skin in mind. Sarah wanted rich, noticeable colours that could stand out beautifully on deeper complexions rather than disappearing against them.
Even the names were connected to the islands. Vilu means lagoon, Kandu refers to the deep ocean, Veli means sand and Muraka means coral. There were shades inspired by coconut, greenery and marine life too, giving the palette a sense of place that went beyond its appearance.

The packaging made it even more personal. Sarah used her own illustration of flowers and fish for the cover, creating something colourful and distinctly Maldivian. The palette also included shades named after two younger cousins, Luka and Lael, bringing a little family affection into the design.
When Moodhu was first introduced, it was presented as the country's first locally inspired makeup line. Looking at the palette, it is easy to see why the idea attracted attention. These were not simply pretty colours with attractive names; they came with stories that people from the Maldives could recognise.
Then Came Monsoon, With a Different Kind of Island Glow
The Maldives is not only about sunshine and beautiful beaches. Its weather has its own character, with changing skies, seasonal winds and the softer colours that appear when the monsoon arrives. Komas Beauty found inspiration there too, introducing the Monsoon Highlighter Palette in 2021.
The collection brought together three highlighting shades, including Iruvai and Hulhangu, named after the two Maldivian monsoon seasons. One reflected the warmth of sunshine and golden hours, while the other drew inspiration from cooler, silver-toned skies. The third shade, Fattaru, took its name from a traditional Maldivian necklace worn with cultural dress.

It is a beautiful detail because it connects makeup with two different parts of island life: nature and traditional jewellery. The Monsoon collection also showed that the brand's inspiration could move beyond the sea without losing its identity. Even something as simple as a highlighter could carry a little memory of the Maldives.
Kamana Celebrates the Women of the Islands
There is another lovely side to the Komas Beauty story, and it appears in the Kamana Palette. Instead of taking inspiration primarily from nature, this sixteen-shade eyeshadow collection celebrates Maldivian women and the language used within families and communities.
The palette brings together warm neutrals, shimmers, pinks and rich reds, with names such as Mamma, Dhaththa, Raani and Ameera. Its floral packaging features an illustration of a traditional Maldivian woman by @zayadraws, surrounded by tropical colours. The combination feels feminine and cheerful without losing the cultural details that make it distinctive.

For women in Sri Lanka, there is something familiar about the affection attached to family words, relationships and traditional forms of address. Our languages may differ, but we understand how much feeling a simple family name can carry. Kamana brings that warmth into a makeup collection, making the colours feel connected to women rather than just beauty trends.
Velaa Takes Us Back to the Ocean, This Time More Gently
One of Komas Beauty's later creations, the Velaa Palette, returns to the natural world through the sea turtles found in Maldivian waters. Unlike the brighter Moodhu collection, Velaa offers eight softer, more neutral eyeshadow shades designed for everyday makeup. Earthy browns, muted greens and gentle shimmers give it a quieter appearance.
The shade names are inspired by marine life, including different turtle species, seagrass, jellyfish and fragments of turtle eggshells. There is something charming about finding these details inside a makeup palette. They remind us that the natural world surrounding the islands contains more than the familiar postcard colours of turquoise and white.

A recent beauty reflection on Moodhu and Velaa also brings these two different colour stories together. One invites women to experiment with the more vivid side of makeup, while the other offers gentler shades for days when they prefer something simple. Both remain connected to the Maldives.
Beautiful Colours, but Also a Familiar South Asian Beauty Story
One particularly meaningful part of Komas Beauty's beginning was Sarah's interest in creating colours that would complement brown skin tones. Across South Asia, women have often had to search through international makeup collections to find colours that look as beautiful on their skin as they do in advertisements. The right pigment, warmth and depth can make an enormous difference to how an eyeshadow appears.
Komas Beauty's identity is also shaped by its commitment to vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics, alongside its island-inspired designs. These values are part of the brand's own approach rather than a reason to assume every product will suit everyone equally. What stands out most is the effort to create makeup that reflects the people, places and colours familiar to its founder.
Komas Beauty Maldives: A Lovely Discovery as the Festive Season Approaches
As November begins and the year-end festive season draws closer, many of us start thinking about celebrations, dressing up and perhaps finding thoughtful gifts for the women around us. Makeup palettes are often part of those conversations, particularly when the colours can work for both everyday looks and special occasions. A collection with a story behind its design can feel a little more personal.
For Maldivian women, Komas Beauty offers familiar words, places and memories in a beautifully presented form. For Sri Lankan women, it is also an opportunity to discover a creative beauty brand from a neighbouring island nation with its own rich culture. The shared love of colour, celebrations and beautifully expressive makeup makes that connection feel natural.
What makes Komas Beauty memorable is that the brand has not tried to separate itself from where it began. The sea, the changing skies, traditional jewellery, family names and marine life all continue to find their way into its palettes. There is still plenty of room for its story to grow, but its most distinctive quality is already clear.
The Maldives may be known around the world for its beautiful islands, but Sarah Ibrahim has found another way to share those colours. This time, they are small enough to fit into a makeup bag, with a little of home carried in every shade. So, why wait?
