Recognised among the Top 50 Great Places to Work in Sri Lanka and the Top 15 Great Places for Women to Work for three consecutive years, Dialog Business Services continues to grow as a people-focused organisation. With a dedicated team of over 1,000 professionals, the company supports Dialog’s 18 million customers and generates over 20 million interactions annually.
For Hemaka Balasuriya, Chief of Dialog Business Services (Pvt) Ltd, building a women-friendly workplace is not about one policy, one programme or one campaign. It is about creating a culture where women feel respected, supported and confident to build meaningful careers.
In this conversation, he shares how DBS continues to empower women across the organisation and why inclusion must remain a business priority.
How does DBS empower women?
“Empowering women is a business priority, not simply a diversity initiative.”
At Dialog Business Services, we firmly believe that organisations perform better when they embrace diverse perspectives, encourage inclusive leadership and create equal opportunities for everyone to succeed.
Our commitment is centred on creating an environment where women can build meaningful careers, grow into leadership positions and contribute confidently across every function of our business, including customer operations, technology, analytics, finance and support services.
More importantly, empowerment is about culture. We strive to create a workplace where every employee feels respected, heard and valued, regardless of gender. Through leadership development, continuous learning, mentoring, wellbeing initiatives and progressive people practices, we aim to remove barriers that may limit career growth.
For us, success is measured not only by representation, but by ensuring every woman has the opportunity, confidence and support to realise her full potential. That commitment continues to shape how we recruit, develop talent and build the future leadership of DBS.

What makes a workplace women-friendly?
“A women-friendly workplace goes beyond policies. It is reflected in everyday behaviours, leadership commitment and organisational culture.”
A truly women-friendly workplace is one where women feel safe, respected, empowered and given every opportunity to succeed based on their talent and performance.
At DBS, we have embedded this philosophy into the way we operate. Our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging framework, together with policies such as Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Code of Conduct and Grievance Management, provides the foundation.
However, culture is created through action, not documentation.
We have established an independent POSH Committee, encourage open dialogue, provide multiple avenues for employees to raise concerns and ensure every individual is treated with fairness and dignity. Equal access to recruitment, learning, promotions and leadership opportunities remains a key priority.
Our objective is simple: to create an environment where women are confident to contribute ideas, challenge convention, take on leadership responsibilities and build long-term careers.
When people feel included and respected, innovation flourishes and the organisation becomes stronger.

What initiatives support women at DBS?
“Supporting women is not about isolated programmes. It is about creating an ecosystem.”
At DBS, many of our initiatives have been shaped by listening to our employees. Our Employee Resource Group, SheHeroes, plays an important role by representing the voice of our female workforce and partnering with leadership to continuously improve the employee experience.
We have introduced a range of initiatives that support women throughout different stages of their careers and personal lives.
These include leadership development programmes with strong female participation, unconscious bias awareness, mandatory ethics and POSH training, flexible working arrangements, enhanced maternity and paternity benefits, support for adoption and fertility treatments, menstrual wellbeing initiatives, newborn and adoption gifts and comprehensive employee wellbeing programmes.
Equally important is our commitment to creating opportunities. We encourage women to pursue careers across both traditional and non-traditional roles, while ensuring recruitment practices remain inclusive and gender neutral.
Collectively, these initiatives reflect our belief that every woman should have the confidence, resources and opportunities to grow professionally while maintaining overall wellbeing.

How will this journey continue?
“Creating an inclusive workplace is a continuous journey.”
As society, technology and workforce expectations evolve, organisations must also continue to evolve.
Our focus over the coming years will be on strengthening the pipeline of female leaders through targeted development, mentoring, coaching and increased exposure to strategic business initiatives.
We also want to continue improving workplace flexibility and wellbeing programmes to better support employees through different stages of life.
Equally important is continuing to build an inclusive leadership culture. Every leader has a responsibility to foster psychological safety, encourage diverse viewpoints and create opportunities for people to perform at their best.
We will continue listening to our employees, measuring progress and refining our people practices, ensuring DBS remains a workplace where women can build rewarding and successful careers.
